Why starting a career in Addiction Medicine?

Substance abuse and addiction have become an epidemic in our country. Through good intentions but questionable medical practices, the medical community helped create a deadly epidemic. Whether a person became addicted to a substance from a legitimate medical use or from making bad choices, it is irrelevant. We need to take care of them anyway, in a compassionate, unbiased, and understanding manner. They are suffering from a disease called “addiction”, that we can and should treat. This disease should not be viewed any different than heart disease, diabetes, etc. These people need help, and we as physicians, should offer it. Our mutual effort, patients and doctors, when successful, will provide us with one of the greatest satisfactions in life: help somebody become and feel a better person.

Dr. Alarcon has achieved the federal DATA2000 Waiver as prerequisite requirement for program to offer Opiate Based Office Treatment services by method of Suboxone Prescription Services.

Nedra Davidson, RN, Nursing Supervisor

Tenley graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College as a Registered Nurse in 2013. Helping patients through all walks of life has been the most rewarding. She was compelled to enter the field of addiction because she has the opportunity to help the whole person, not merely the diagnosis. For a person to be successful in every step of their recovery process, it’s imperative that they have a strong support team around them, both within their home clinic and in the community. Being a nurse in addictions allows me to grow as a medical professional, supporter, and educator. Professionals within this field walk the path of Recovery together with their patients in an empathetic and Altruistic manner

Tracy Jones, BSN,RN, Dispensing Nurse

Tracy is a registered nurse working in the field of addiction and medication maintenance.  She became a nurse out of her love and need to care for others. She began her journey of becoming a nurse in 2006 at Delaware Technical & Community College and recently obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Wilmington University.  Tracy’s next career goal is to become a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse.  In the interim, her focus remains on caring for her patients and their individual needs.

She chose to work in the field of addiction and medication maintenance because she finds being a part of the patient’s daily progress and overall success to be rewarding.  The key in being an effective nurse in this field is to recognize the patient as an individual needing care and not to define them by their diagnosis. The field of addiction and medication maintenance allows me as a nurse to medicate, educate and offer local and statewide resources for an optimal outcome.  She recommends this field of nursing to any nurse wanting to experience a rewarding career.
